Although I'm a little late, I'd like to offer my contribution to Canada Day - a salute to the farmers of our country. They were the pioneers who spread out across this land. Their hard work and determination formed the bedrock of communities from coast to coast. In today's fast paced world, we tend to forget their contributions to Canada, both past and present. Farming is still a key economic sector in Canada, one that needs and deserves our respect and attention. Many modern farmers work both on and off the farm in order to sustain themselves in a market drowning in world subsidies. Unless we stand up for our farmers today - we risk losing an important part of our heritage and our economic engine.

Take some time this summer or fall. Go to a local farm Fair or open house. Visit your local market and support your area farmers. Bring yourself up to speed on the issues and challenges facing today's farmers. Let them know that not all Canadians have forgotten them.
