Rodney MacDonald won the Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative party's leadership on Saturday and will become the province's next premier.
The former tourism minister replaces Premier John Hamm, who announced his retirement last fall.
"What a great day to be a Tory in Nova Scotia," a jubilant MacDonald said in his victory speech. "I am moved by the confidence you have shown in me."
The premier-designate and his new cabinet will be officially sworn in Feb.24.
