Cracks can cut down on votes

During an election campaign tour with the late Robert Stanfield as the Progressive Conservative leader, we were walking through an airport while Stanfield bantered with his French-Canadian aide who was carrying his luggage.
During a rather comic exchange of insults, Stanfield said: "Pierre doesn't like to carry my luggage but if French-Canadians can't carry your luggage what good are they?
I froze. My God, I thought, if I were to report that remark Stanfield would be doomed in Quebec and probably a good deal of the rest of Canada.
